Often described as being:
- Immature
- Dependent
- Impulsive
- Self-centered
- Rigid
- Rejecting
- They tend to lack nurturing and coping skills and have a relatively low frustration tolerance.
- They are often socially isolated and distrustful of their neighbors.
- Often they have been abused themselves and have a poor relationship with their own parents and spouse.
- Parents have a history of poor relationships with their own parents.
- They werw abused as children.
- The family is isolated.
- Little or no interest is shown in the child's treatment.
- Tend to have one or more of these attitudes about children and the parenting process:
- Have high expectations of the children that are not consistent with the child's developmental capabilities.
- Have been abused themselves.
- Expect the child to be a caretaker to the parent.
- Are more centered on themselves than on the child. Have an orientation directed more toward their own satisfaction than the satisfaction of the child.
- Immaturity, low self esteem, difficulty in seeking and finding pleasure and satisfaction in the adult world, social isolation, serious lack of ability to be empathetic in relationship to the child.
